The mysterious death of Barack Obama’s personal chef, Tafari Campbell, has caused much confusion and debate in the media.
The Daily Mail exclusively revealed how the Massachusetts state police are going to great lengths to cover up basic information regarding his drowning on Great Edgartown Pond on Martha’s Vineyard while still characterizing his death as an “accident”.
The Obamas were not at home when Campbell drowned but were reportedly on the island. Police are citing a Public Records Law exemption that allows them to withhold any information that could jeopardize an active investigation, which they have been able to do by labeling the incident an accident.
Justin Silverman, head of the region’s First Amendment Coalition, explained this ruling is being abused by police and does not follow the law.
He stated that it was up to law enforcement to demonstrate how their investigation may be jeopardized by releasing certain information and that they had not done this properly yet.
This cover-up goes even deeper with state police officials making sure other agencies involved in the response follow their lead and providing rejection letters for media inquiry into further details about what happened that night.
Here is what one of them says:
Hello. At this time, we will not be releasing any recordings or materials, the message read, and cited the state Public Records Law, noting it exempts the release of records that ‘would probably so prejudice the possibility of effective law enforcement that such disclosure would not be in the public interest.
The exemption allows investigative officials to withhold materials that could compromise investigative efforts if disclosed.
Major Susan Schofield, the supervisor of communications for the sheriff’s office, only made excuses when pressed by the Daily Mail.
Sorry, I’m trying to abide by the law. Obviously, we’re getting a lot of requests and we don’t like to not give out information, but we can’t.
State police are investigating, and we can’t release information.
An autopsy revealed that Campbell had drowned, although the only matter supposedly pending is a toxicology report to determine whether drugs were in his system or if he suffered some kind of medical episode.
The Obama family has been vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard for the past several weeks and life had seemed to return to normal for them after this tragedy.
Sasha and Malia Obama left on Tuesday while Michelle Obama was spotted playing tennis at Farm Neck Country Club and her husband Barack was seen golfing with bandaged fingers at Vineyard Golf Club.
